Calico fabric is made from unbleached, and often not fully processed cotton. It is far coarser than fabrics such as muslin, but much softer and thinner than fabrics such as denim or canvas. Most commonly, calico fabric is used to make toiles, a trial version of a finished garment made up of an inexpensive material to allow the product to be tested and perfected before the final product is drafted. As such, calico fabric is a staple piece for dressmakers and textile students alike.

Calico Fabric can be used for much more than just toiles. We recommend using calico fabric for items that will undergo daily wear and tear that will require them to remain strong and withstand everyday chafing. Due to its durability and sturdiness, calico is often used for household items such as aprons, bags, curtains and furnishings.
